Interdiciplinary artist and performer,as well as culture producer and art programmer. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and grew up in the USA , since 2005 has been living in Europe, base now in both Taiwan and Europe. Miss Mei has studied Dance in National Institute of Arts, BFA/BA in Interdisciplanary Arts and Art History from Univesity of Illinois at Urbana Champaign USA, and Advanced Diploma in Physical Theatre and Interdiciplinary Performance Arts from the MimeCentre, Helsinki Finland.

Delphine has received scholarship-study as a exchange student of European Culture Studies at the Institut für Europäische Studien (IES) in Vienna, at the Cite Universite Foundation America in Paris, and was the recipient of the YMCA John Price Award for International Understanding, for her efforts to foster international relations and understandings of multiplicity across culture-sectors and diverse groups.

Delphine's featured performance for Austrian director Laura Nauebauer of the film "Glueck" has won ORF "Shorts on Screen" Award, shown in the Austrian National Television Broadcast ORF, and Crossing Europe Festival. She has participated New York's Judson church Improv group, and San Francisco's 848 Improv group. Miss Mei's own works in both Performance(Acting,dance, performance) and Performantive Installations : San Francisco International Film Festival Opening Gala, San Francisco International Butoh Festival, SF Fringe Theatre Festival (eg:"Neon's Blue", nominated for best supporting actress), International Performance and Video Festival at Marsh, San Francisco Exit Theatre, "I am Seducible" San Francisco Film Group, "Yes Maybe No" Bates Film, "The Legend of Shirley Mentle" (Music Theatre) Theatre Rhino San Francisco, "The Skirker" WOW Performance Space New York, Wiener Bezirk Festwochen(vienna District regional Festival), Vienna's MQ Museum Quartier 21 International, Vienna's Soho In Ottakring Festival, TED Vienna 2010, Fluxus intermedia performance for Vienna's Art Birthday 2011 amongst many others.

Delphine has also worked as a second cameraman for kunstgestaltung Austria, and since 2007 made her own videos and short poetic films. Her photo "Modern Ruin seies 1 astera" has been included in the group show "snap to grip", LACDA(LA Center for Digital Art), USA.

2005-2007,received fellowship, in charge of producing creative and innovative projects, ICCM(International Center for Culture and Arts Management, headquarter in Salzburg).
Delphine's production and curation-program MFMC C16 has won EUtopia's Festival of the Month Europa wide. Cine16 program has continued the mission of "film as a subversive art" to support independent and experimental films and videos, eg: Soho-In-Ottakring Festival 2008 Vienna, Top Kino 2011 Vienna.
Delphine produced and organized the "Evolution Art Salon: Theater Performance and Trans-Europa Social Media" for Istanbul's Art Conference “Intercultural Dialogue and Cooperation Projects” under the flagship of Istanbul 2010 European Culture Capital.

In recent years: Delphine was the performance artist in residenct in OVT301 Amsterdam NL, selected project artist at the Schmiede MediaArt Festival Performance Lab(2005-2008 every year), and the invited guest artist for UCDavis for contemporary performance lecture workshop series. From end of 2010 till present, she is on the residency with the Erasmus Mundos Program in Film Television Theatre, Vienna Austria, and teach workshops in performances of different kinds and creative research field, specifically time-based media perfomance on video focusing on use of the language as a performantive code and her own cyborg-doll theory development based on Donna Haraway's cyborg manifesto and her previous Butoh training asthetics.
In 2011, She is a invited guest artist workshop lecturer for Linz Art University Linz, as well as giving workshop for Mz Baltazars Laboratory Vienna.

Delphine has also been working with a group of interdiciplinary artists philosopher with media mobile digital devices, people from different fields for collaborations. You can see such collaborative multiple-element works in 2011-2012. She also continue working with performance, fashion shows, alternative indie scenes, shamanistic works, and literary works as a poet. Her peotry works have been selected in "Message in a Bottle: 100 contemporary American Poets", Germany's Raintiger featured poet, and shown in collaboration with musicians as spoken poetry in Vienna Conservatory and TED Vienna 2010. She also pens lyrics for songs and sings both on theatrical musical stage (The Legend of Shirley Mentle, Theatre Rhino, San Francisco) as well as in other occasions as a vocalist for different bands.
2011 April, commissioned choreography performance by Austrian composer Andrea Olszweski with the Vienna Conservatory.
2011 April as a guest speaker on "Arts in Youth Work" for Earth Charter International Youth e-Conference April 14th 2011.
Delphine's artwork will be featured on the "Streberpramïe” on ARTE creative art and culture TV,summer 2011.

Delphine is also a professional translator, being bilingual in both Chinese and English, well versed in culture and arts, and specializing in both written and oral translation, and event hosting. She has worked for PBS(Public Broadcast Service in the USA), Salzburg Sommer Szene Festival(art music dance), and Taipei Biennial.
She has also been a model: for commerical print ad.- New York(New York New York Model Agency) , for runway fashion- San Francisco(Artist by Design, premier theatrical fashion production), runway fashion- Salzburg/Vienna(Sixxa).

Although diverse, Delphine's work has been centered around women/gender, travel/migration/cultural transition and transfer, building meaningful social network community, youth empowerment thru art and knowledge sharing, and enrich and support sub-culture's survival and evolution.

8 Gestures: Lost In Transrelation, performance video八種姿勢:關係之間の走失記

8 is a number of infinite possiblities, like seeds, it manifests in different lands, environments, traveling thru varieties of emotional mental zones.
"8 Gestures" are these manifestations related to somantic body-social-behaviors-psychology of identities. Or more appropriately, shifting identities.

Playing with words, images, explore the distance and intimacy between self and self, self and others, and that of humans and virtual reality such as media news that these days, we incorporate into our daily life as a vital part of our identities without much thinking.

Through relationships, be it with ourselves or with others, friends or lovers or family or strangers, every day we live in these and constantly define and refine who we are.

videos stories, verbal or nonverbal, of identities crossing and counter-cross: Mixed footages from documentary style mingles with fictions based on personal stories:
interviews of Japanese immigrants and expats groom-to-be to Germany, Turkish ice-cream seller living in Taiwan, news footages, a Taiwanese groom-to-be marrying a German bride and soon imigrating far away to his homeland, an anonymous traveler journey to China-HongKong-Taiwan, a Taiwanese immigrant first day landing in San Francisco, group of mixed internationals crammed in a small ktv room in the big city to have one fleeing moment of singing karaokee together and may never seen each other again, dancing bodies of a nameless man and woman covered with texts of calligraphy, undressing as their second layer of identities being stripped off unveiling in front of our eyes.

These videos, when put into tv or other screens, are also symbols of suitcases: suitcases of memories we have, where we are from, suitcases of where we are going to, and these boxes also used in our daily life to continuously store the present.
they echo the interplay between living human existance and the video virtual existance, illustrating the complex layers of these shifting identities in our modern world

8 is a tribute to Fellini's film 8 1/2 women, and Lost in Transrelation is tribute to Lost in Translation by Sophia Coppola. Vastly different in visual language, this is a alternative day-to-day honest look at our life thru varied zons of desires in ever-changing realities.

V.I.A Box An Art Installation (Artist: Delphine Mae, Curator, Jessica White)

This art installation is a piece that is part of the VIA project is founded on the idea of finding a common language through art. In the opening of the piece we are guided towards the box through the means of a silk road. The silk-road was a place not only of travel but also of economic, political and cultural exchange.

Kanji, travelled down this road, through Korea and to Japan. These countries incorporated it into their already existent writing systems, so that although each place has Kanji as part of their language, it is combined with their own unique language. So there is commonality, one can visit China and read the Kanji if one is Japanese, and visa versa, however, there is a uniqueness of culture and language that exists in each place too. This concept relates V.I.A in that we are creating spaces in which teenagers can relate to each other through a common language of art, and the mediums of art that speak to each other are rich in diversity such as film, illustration, painting, photography, dance and theatre. The diversity goes even further at the micro-level of expression as each individual is unique and no person feels or experiences everything in the same way, and it is in this diversity that there is unity.

This path of the silk-road leads to the box. The box is a representation of the skin of a human being. Most of the time we all live inside of our box, but what is the depths of our souls. Our souls are full of hope and wishes for a brighter future. These wishes are as diverse as what make up the whole of humanity. The illustrations on Japanese rice paper that are tied to the strings above you as you sit down in the box and are inspired from an ancient Asian tradition. In this tradition, people write their wishes for the future onto delicate hand-made paper and tie them to a tree, usually near a temple, in hope that the spirit of the soul will set them free. Here inside the box, is this hope. Can our human skin set it free? We believe so. The door is unlocked, alluding to our need in humanity for a deeper security that goes beyond, suspicion from Judgement that we all have for each other and asks us feel secure within ourselves letting the light of our soul come into our skin and shine out into the world. It takes time to heal and become comfortable with this, and so as you prepare yourself, you can sit and listen to the sounds, you will hear the sounds of the road. This road is inspired by the silk-road. Along this road there are many different influences and even distractions of the contemporary world: advertisements tempting us through our false desires and vanities, intermingled with the sounds of humanity, friendships, cultural exchanges, laughter, dialogue and love. You can look on the door of the box and see our world through pictures. These pictures are of war, sorrow and regulation pasted together with that of friendship, intellectual hope, spirituality, humility and kindness. As our wishes hang above us represented through a diversity of religions and spiritual paths that lead to the same soul, one that is unified collectively through every one of us, we are urged to find our way on the road of life, to discern the sounds and images of darkness from that of the light soul. This light only glimpses and peeks at us to look at it directly would be blinding and so that is why we must seek and find. It is our souls path through our human mission.

As we step out of our box we are lead back onto the beginnings of the silk-road. We are urged to pause to contemplate a new spring represented through a branch of fresh Sakura (cherry blossom) a good omen to a new beginning, to look at the familiar with old eyes. It is here that we become innocent again, playful, a toy for writing your own language lies before you as your journey begins anew, a fool and innocent once more. Recognising that difference can be our unity.

Delphine Kini Mae is an artist of international standing, having worked in the US, Asia and Finland she is now collaborating with numerous cultural institutes in Austria including Maize in Linz, KultureKontakt Austria, Schmiede Platform Salzburg, and a video project with teenagers in Tirol. Aesthetic of Tradition; Aethetic of the Banana Generation

A site-specific performative installation from July07 to Jan08 on display at Maiz Schaufenster Linz, comissioned by 'Identität Heute...' , funded and supported by Maiz, ukk, LinzKultur, KulturLandOÖ.

Below are some basic concepts I was working with concerning this installation:

1) Formalistic Elements:
The idea here is to make use of the traditional icons such as a Chinese dress Qui-Pao and altar objects, which are commonly seen in everyday Chinese households. In this way of representation, I also pose questions to viewers of how to represent cultural. Furthermore, how traditional cultural icons and new western-influenced visual contents can be represented.
It is precisely because I am dealing with such complex codes of the old and the new with their signifiers and underlying meanings, that I chose an almost too-simplistic, formalistic means of representation.

2) Questions of culture: Present and Future
Through my work, I want to ask questions like: What does diversity really mean? What does ‘trans-cultural’, ‘trans-global’ underline and define? Can we really identify Asia as a whole homogenized culture bracket? Can National identities such as China as one?

As a individual, I am also interested in personal body images within the Asian-&-western communities. It is aligned with my personal interest to continuously investigate of such questtionsy which one can see also in an older piece 2004 'Homeland, Dreambody'.

Lastly:
I belong to the so-called ‘banana generation’(a term used in the west coast of America which means a-Asian-raised-in-western-society. Therefore, outside skin is yellow like the banana skin, but inside is white like the inside of a banana).

This concept is manifested everywhere in the query of this work. For example: notice the use of question marks all over the paper dress as the jaxposition to the other window's dress: I use the question marks in parallel to the classic design of the chinese dress and the idea of decoration. As a matter of fact, as the viewer come closer, they start to see they are actually question marks in the second window dress(paper dress), which also speaks of question of the new Chinese identity.

Delphine Kini Mae: Originally from a small Pacific Asiatic island named Taiwan in Asia, Delphine has practiced in New York, San Francisco, other parts of Asia and Europe. She has studied in Dance/Theatre from the Institute of Arts in Asia, modern/contemporary dance in the United States, And a study diploma in Physical Theatre and Mime special forcus on dance in MimeCentre Finland. She is currently on leave from UVA Film Netherlands. Aside from installing and picking up lost shoes and conversations on the streets around the world, she was also a guest artist for contemporary performance in University of California at Davis. Delphine's work has been selected in festivals such as the Buddhist-inspired International Video and Performance Festival in Marsh, Dada Fest, In the Street Festiva, San Francsico International Butoh Festival, SF MOMA Benefit, and International Film Festival Gala. Delphine has also collaborated with performance groups as well as served as the artistic director for HumanSewingMachine. Her recent interests has been focused in cultural diversity and global mobility and its effects on perception of the human physical and emotional spheres. Delphine's work/performances often reflect a combination of different styles such as Butoh, contemporary dances, oriental folk dance gestures, street dances, traditional mask dance theatre, Chinese opera style/martial arts practices, ect. Her other special interest is to create site-specific works of performantive installation work which transports every space into a intimate internal emotional journey. In Europe, Delphine has been performing in a monthly experimental performance forum in OVT301, Amsterdam, for the 2005 Feb/Mrach/May as well as teaching as a international guest resident teacher with movements/theatre for YPOT301, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Another performance lab project with Schmiede-Hallein in 2005 which is also part of Salzburg SommerSzene, Austria. Consequently, 2006 with MFMC project, and 2007 with the dance film project Mirgationlovesongseries1. Her collaboration and performance works in Europe also include: 'Lust Am Risiko', an interactive installation performance evening, at SEAD(Salzburg, Experiment Academy of Dance); 'Glück', a dance silent film with soundtrack, produced and directed by Laura Nöbauer,which won the Austria ORF 'Shorts on Screen' award, shown as a special feature in the 2007 Diagonale Film Festival and CrossingEurope FilmFestival; 'Slap!' Music Video, top rated music video of the month by Youtube; 'Long River Calls out My Name', ArgeKultur, March 2007, Franz Josef China Fest, July 2007, among others. Miss Mae has also been active in producing, directing, and choreographying her own dance films ever since her award-winning performance in the GLÜCK07. In recent year, she has also established herself as a site-sepcific performative-video installation artist, showing her works in austria, Norway,ect. while maintaining her teaching role as a workshop teacher mingling butoh/viewpoint/martialarts/physicaltheatre trainings to create unique wholistic teaching methods for all levels. Delphine is currently based in central and northern Europe.
